A lot of people like the idea of growing herbs, but are often kept back by the potential costs. After all, seeing a garden filled with these lovely herbs must signify a lot of expenses. But that need not be the situation at all.

If like most, you just want to start growing herbs to freshen up and beautify the garden plus have a stock of your favorite garnishing, then you can do it at a relatively low cost.

One of the areas where you can save money in growing herbs are the containers. You do not need to buy any of the large and expensive pots you see at the stores; you can utilize any container or box lying around the house. The drainage system can be made easily by cutting holes at the bottom, and placing several stones beneath. It may not be pretty, but it is low cost.

If you intend to start growing herbs indoors, you can also use simple fluorescent lighting. There are those who use skylights, and there are even products available in stores that are designed especially for these plants, but the truth is that fluorescent lights, together with exposure to sunlight every few hours, will be enough for most herbs.

One area you will not want to scrimp when growing herbs will be the soil. While there are low cost methods for the other parts, here you will want to buy the best you can afford. Although it may set you back some, it will pay itself off when you start growing herbs successfully. If you had settled for just ordinary soil and sand, your herbs will not bear the flavor that you want, or worse, not grow at all. The end result is that you will buy more seeds, leading to more costs.

Growing herbs at a low cost need not mean an inferior product; by using the proper techniques as described, you will still be able to get the most out of them at a fraction of the expense of other gardens.
