Primarily known as the kind of herb that has the ability to grow for several seasons, perennial herb has different attractive, special, and interesting qualities, that everyone must know. Many people plant perennial herbs because these have various uses, like medicinal characteristics. Some of these herbs are also useful in cooking since these possess aromatic and savory properties. However, growing the plants require dedication because some of them have low tolerance in changing weather and climate.
How to Grow Perennial Herbs
One of the factors that people should consider when planting and growing perennial herbs is the characteristics and qualities of these plants. For instance, when growing aloe vera, people should always remember to take the plant inside the house during winter since it is very sensitive to cold weather. Additionally, gardeners must be careful when watering aloe vera. On the other hand, every garden should have fennel for it is very popular to lure swallowtail butterflies.
Secondly, it is best if gardeners use large containers for growing perennial herbs. It is also helpful if they place the plants in a patio or even in a deck. Most gardeners promote the use of ceramic, clay, and wooden pots when planting perennial herbs since they can easily transfer the plants indoors during cold weather.
Finally, gardeners should harvest herbs at daytime. In addition, it is important to label the herbs since most of them have similar appearances when dried. Above all, storing dried herbs in a dry and cool container is necessary, to avoid losing the special qualities of the plants.
Examples of Perennial Herbs
Aside from aloe vera and fennel, other perennial herbs that people will find useful are bay laurel, catnip, and chicory. Bay laurel is very useful in improving flavors of soups and stews. On the other hand, catnip has characteristics that can enhance taste in salads and teas. Meanwhile, for people who are in search for a perennial herb that can be added to coffees, it is best if they grow chicory in their home gardens.
Other perennial herbs that gardeners should consider including in their gardens are ginseng, ground ivy, and horehound. Ginseng is very popular to people for its aphrodisiac qualities. Furthermore, ground ivy is effective in treating pediatric digestive problems. When it comes to expectorants and cough suppressants, patients can find horehound very helpful. Thus, with all the special and unique characteristics of these plants, every gardener must consider putting perennial herbs in their gardens.
